Does the Great Commission Apply to all Christians?

Disciples are commanded to fulfill the Great Commission

At the ascension of Jesus Christ, we read in Matthew 28:19-20 that He commissioned His disciples to go and preach the Gospel to all nations.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (ESV)

However, to some, this command comes as a pressure point for church organizational leaders to push their members do the things which does not come natural to them, especially the new converts.

Every Christian are called to serve.

Serving one another in love is the general command for all Christians, such as what can be read in Galatians 5:13-14 and Romans 12:10. This generic command is for all to do and live out. That is, in what ever we do, we should always consider other people, we should always consider others as more important than us, as what can be read in Philippians 2:3.

"Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility consider one another as more important than yourselves;" (NASB)

Not all Christians are called to serve.

No, not all Christians are called to serve in all areas of the Lords' ministry. That means, each member of the church must not be put under pressure to do everything all at once.

" What the Lord intends for His disciples to accomplish is

to serve all together in unity, as one body. "

As what Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 12:12-27, each member has specific gift and role in the Church (read Matthew 25).

What is like to be a servant?

When a person becomes a true Christian, he/she signs a contract for eternity. A contract of surrendering unto God as the master of his/her life.

1.) A servant puts premium of his/her time and effort to please the master in everything he/she does.

2.) Unlike human servant who might do the job for salary sake, serving God is enjoying both the Gospel and sharing the Gospel. Again, this does not mean that everyone must become pastors, evangelist, preachers, nor ministers of the Gospel. But everyone's life must be a message to others about the Gospel of Christ.

3.) Christian servant do not serve taking on the pride of position nor designation. Christian servants are serving in humility like the Lord Jesus Christ himself.

4.) Christian servant is responsible maintenance/service crew who reads and re-read the service manual, that is the Bible. He/she understand that getting wisdom is the wisest thing to do (Proverbs 4:7).

5.) Christian servant loves learning, glad to welcome biblical correction to become wiser (Proverbs 18:2, Proverbs 12:1, 1 John 2:16).

According to Martin Luther King, Jr.;

"Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity."

6.) Christian servant seeks wisdom from God, from the Bible, not from anyone else, especially, not the wisdom from the world (James 1:5)

7.) Christian servant finds joy and diligence of learning and carefully share the message of God rightly (2 Timothy 2:15, 2 Peter 1:10)

8.) Christian servant is always delighted in meditating the word of God (Psalms 1:1-2, Psalms 119:16)

Isn't it funny that sometimes, a Christian gets more excited at reading social media contents than reading the word of God? It is like, a newbie repair mechanic who expects costumers and yet does not spend enough time to study the machinery repair manual?

Experience more intimacy in human relationships than with God? It is serving your employer whom you don't like.

Enjoy more in pleasures of materials things than heavenly things? It is like enjoying a drinking party overnight and suffer hang-over the following day.

A true Christian serve God as his/her only master in all things. Considering the Bible as service manual, and operations manual.

Christians are enabled do service to God and others.

With the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, Christians have been enabled to acquire understanding, do the servant's work, and live disciplined for it is written in 2 Timothy 1:7;

"God gave us his Spirit. And the Spirit doesn’t make us weak and fearful. Instead, the Spirit gives us power and love. He helps us control ourselves."

Christian are enabled servants upon putting his/her faith in Jesus Christ and by having the gift of the Holy Spirit. Because to those who seek the Lord will never lack in anything (Psalm 34:30)

God demands faithful and true service

As it is written in Hosea 6:6

"I want mercy and not sacrifice.

I want you to recognize me as God

instead of bringing me burnt offerings."

Taking part in every service for God, for others through the use of one's skills, talents, and resources is a service level at the minimum.

What every Christian must excel upon is to develop a lifestyle that truly display the teachings of the Lord and the Apostles, and the keep on pushing towards the mark (Philippians 3:13-14) to win the prize.

Again, does the Great Commission to all Christians?

Yes, every Christian must share the Gospel. And start it by manifesting the renewed life. A life that is a light and a salt to the world (Matthew 5:13-16) and a life that is of good example to all people (Ephesians 5:1-33). These can be accomplished because of God's saving Grace, because true Christian is being born again, not in flesh, not in religion (John 3:3-16).

No, not everybody shall serve in critical and specific ministry function such as teaching and field mission if he/she is not yet ready in knowledge and character (James 3:1). That is why, every Christian must acquire more knowledge and seek God's wisdom to be of greater service in the future.

" Fulfilling the Great Commission is a collective effort of Christians,

it is not a one-man's job, but the whole Church job. "
